The story behind the canvas

Zareena

I am an accomplished visual artist and freelance creative arts practitioner with over two decades of experience in the arts known for my versatility and innovation.

To me, art is not just a career—it’s my life. It’s where I find joy, purpose, peace and endless possibilities.

My heritage

I am of South Asian heritage, from Lahore, Pakistan,  born and raised in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. My identity reflects a beautiful blend of both worlds, and this duality is a significant influence in my art and storytelling.

Languages spoken: English, Punjabi and Urdu

What drew me to visual arts

Art has been my lifelong passion. As a child, I was endlessly curious and creative, collecting autumn leaves, flowers, pebbles, and unusual objects to draw and colour. Daydreaming and seeing the world through a unique lens set me apart, and art became my escape—a way to explore, imagine, and create.

Though I faced discouragement in school, where I was told I wasn’t skilled at art, my love for creativity persisted. This setback led me to pursue other interests, such as learning to read, write, and speak Urdu—a skill that later became invaluable when working with local communities and heritage projects.

At home, I created my own little studio in the attic, filled with collected materials: leftover fabrics from my mother’s sewing projects, Quality Street wrappers, scrap paper, and Crayola crayons. I used recycled items to craft small projects, delighting in colours, patterns, and the joy of creating something from nothing.

For many, art was just a hobby—not a “real” career. I started my professional life working in a bank and later in finance and administration for Bradford Council. However, a thoughtful gift from a manager—a book on glass painting—reignited my passion. I read it cover to cover, practiced diligently, and discovered a new medium that captivated me.

After years of working in a stable but uninspiring job, I craved change. With a young family, I sought a better work-life balance, more time with my son, and a chance to follow my dreams. Leaving my job to pursue art was a bold risk, and while some thought I was crazy, I’ve never looked back. With my family’s unwavering support, I’ve built a life where art, family, and passion coexist harmoniously.

The world is full of inspiration. I’m drawn to the sea, books, travel, and people, as well as the intricate patterns of South Asian, Persian, Turkish, Moroccan, and Arabic geometric designs. I’m particularly captivated by paisley. My work embraces and merges the rich traditional designs with contemporary artistic expression, creating pieces that are both culturally evocative and modern.

I am self-motivated, even on difficult days, and visions of new ideas constantly fuel my creativity. Whether I’m crafting workshop concepts or exploring new mediums, my imagination knows no bounds.

Art is my passion, and sharing it is my purpose. I teach and deliver art workshops, encouraging others to explore their creativity. In the early days, I brought college prospectuses to women’s groups, inspiring them to pursue education and opportunities. I have helped countless individuals to improve their mental health and wellbeing through the transformative healing power of creativity whether through vibrant canvases, intricate mandalas or collaborative art sessions, I continue to make a meaningful impact.

Art has been my solace and strength through life’s challenges. As a breast cancer survivor and someone who has faced spinal surgery, I know firsthand the healing power of art. It makes me feel alive, blessed, and grateful.

Sustainability is at the heart of my practice, and I find beauty in giving old or unused items a new lease of life as unique artwork. This approach reflects my passion for creating art with purpose fostering environmental responsibility.

Materials & mediums

I work with mixed media, including handmade paper, recycled materials, and various paints incorporating vibrant patterns, intricate details and bold palettes, resulting in striking works of art that captivate and inspire.

How i view myself

I am committed to growth, always exploring new techniques, ideas, and approaches to my art. Innovation drives me, and even when revisiting old projects, I strive to blend the past with the present.

Influences & Inspiration

Books, exhibitions, nature, and travel inspire me deeply. I’m fascinated by how images and words can merge to create something unique and bold.

Inspirations in the Art World

Meeting Salima Hashmi, a renowned Pakistani artist, curator, and activist, was a profound experience. Her wisdom on art, philosophy, and culture continues to inspire me. I also draw from the rich tapestry of Asian culture, using art to preserve stories and traditions for future generations.

Addressing Barriers

Art, and especially women in art, are often underrepresented. While formal qualifications are valued, my life experience and artistic practice speak volumes.

Supporting Emerging Artists

My work goes beyond aesthetics, it touches lives. I strive to nurture that creativity in others, especially young people, by offering opportunities and encouraging self-expression and creative interaction.

Future aspirations

I aim to push the boundaries of my artistic practice, collaborate with other artists and organisations, and explore new opportunities, including delivering creative workshops abroad bringing unique blend of cultural heritage, contemporary style and sustainable artistry to a global stage such inviting the audience to explore my vision of art as a bridge between tradition and modernity, individuality and community and the beauty and purpose.

Vision for the Future

I dream of establishing an inclusive art gallery that celebrates South Asian artists, women, and young talents. I envision creating an art and wellbeing centre to further intertwine art and healing.

Final Thoughts

Art is my journey, my passion, and my way of life. Through it, I find connection, expression, and endless possibilities.
The best is yet to come.
